We
(Pat & Judy Medlicott) are both originally from Dunedin, Otago. Pat graduated
in Medicine in 1971 and Judy also graduated with an MA in History. Judy became
a teacher and Pat went on to become an Orthopaedic Surgeon going to Oxford
in 1978 and then we both spent 22 years in New Plymouth where Pat practiced
and Judy was Head of History and Year 13 Dean at New Plymouth Girls High School.
During our Mid-50's, we were both well established in New Plymouth with good jobs and leisurely weekends filled with tennis and golf. Despite this we always viewed the South as home and decided well after our children had left home that we would relocate, so we resigned both our jobs and moved south in early 2003.
We have two children Kate in Hamilton and Sarah in Wellington and 3 grandchildren Lachlan (5), Izobel and Anders aged 2.
Since then we have developed a 4.2 ha vineyard in Alexandra named Greylands Ridge after the old family farm where Pat's father was born early last century in the Waimate area.
Judy also expanded her horizons by starting a cafe with a friend in Alexandra called "The Shaky Bridge Cafe", while leaving Pat to supervise extensions to the existing house and vineyard. This gave Pat a complete break from medicine for some months before returning as an Orthopaedic Consultant throughout Otago and Southland.
We sold our interest in the Café in 2005 and now work five or six days a week in Alexandra, Dunedin, Clyde and Invercargill in our day jobs (Judy is now practice manager) and as others slow down for retirement, we have adopted as our motto "avoid retirement and stay alive" from the recently published book.
.......along with our raison d'être;
If
we can produce quality wine then our dreams will be fulfilled......
We bottled our first 650 cases of Pinot Noir in Febuary 2007 and this will be released to the market in 2008.
....
the climatic extremes found in Central Otago, New Zealand are proving to
be ideal for producing an excellent pinot noir wine .....
