Pinot Noir may be the toughest grape to grow, but the effort is well worth the investment. It is a fickle grape that demands optimum growing conditions, demanding warm days consistently supported by cool evenings. The climate found in Central Otago, New Zealand is proving to be ideal for producing an excellent wine as the climatic conditions epitomise the Pinot Noir's requirements.

Central Otago Pinot NoirJo Burzynska discovers you don’t have to search for long to strike on impressive pinot noirs in Alexandra Basin.

In the 1860s, Frenchman Jean Desire Feraud travelled to Central Otago's Alexandra district in search of gold, and went on to establish the region's first winery. The gold proved more profitable than wine for Feraud - at a time when beer was the beverage of choice - but nowadays, wine has emerged as one of the area's real treasures.

Greylands Ridge Supports NZ SPCA

Alex cairn and a bottle to commemorate him.3% of all sales of Ridgeback Alex Pinot Noir 2008 is donated to the NZ SPCA. This wine was name after the Medlicott family's Ridgeback/cross SPCA "pound puppy" Alexander (1990 - 2004). His rocky cairn lies on a small ridge overlooking the back block of the vineyard and on his plaque is a quote from Lord Byron.
